For the first time this academic year, the I-80 rivalry is renewed between Nebraska and Creighton. Normally, with Pinnacle Bank Arena behind me, it’s the basketball teams taking center stage.

But Wednesday, it’s volleyball — in front of an already announced sellout — as the Huskers and Bluejays meet for the 25th time.OC:

Nebraska is undefeated in the series, having won the previous 24 meetings.

But don’t let that number fool you into thinking this has been easy lately.

Three of the last four meetings have gone five sets, including each of the past two seasons. Last year’s match in Omaha at CHI Health Center drew 17,675 fans — the largest indoor regular-season, volleyball-only crowd in NCAA history.

Both teams come in ranked, but their weeks looked very different.
Nebraska is 7-0 and stayed No. 1 in the AVCA Top 25 after a perfect 3-0 week.

The Huskers beat New Mexico, then-No. 20 Baylor and Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech ended Nebraska’s 18-set winning streak to open the season, but Nebraska answered by taking the final three sets.

That’s what this team has done all year. Nebraska is hitting .330, leads the nation by holding opponents to .101 hitting, averages 2.77 blocks per set and nearly two aces per set.

Harper Murray leads Nebraska’s outside attack at three kills per set. Three-time Big Ten Setter of the Year Bergen Reilly is putting up more than 11 assists per set while hitting .483 herself. In the middle, Manaia Ogbechie — fresh off Big Ten Player of the Week honors — leads the Huskers with 1.35 blocks per set.

Creighton comes in at 5-4 and ranked No. 20. The Bluejays are looking to bounce back after going 1-2 at the Rice Invitational.

The Bluejays opened with a four-set win over Northern Iowa, then lost in four sets to No. 5 Louisville and Rice. That Rice match included a wild 37-35 second set where the Bluejays squandered 9 set point chances.

But Creighton has played one of the tougher early schedules in the country, with wins already over No. 9 Purdue and No. 20 USC.

Ayden Ames is the player to watch for the Bluejays. The Texas transfer is hitting .326 with 2.05 kills and 1.05 blocks per set. Her matchup with Jackson and Ogbechie in the middle could decide a lot of points.

For Creighton, the formula is simple: serve Nebraska tough, make Bergen Reilly and the Huskers work out of system, extend rallies and force this into another late-set battle.

Nebraska has the edge in efficiency, at the net and with a rowdy sellout crowd at PBA.

But Creighton has already shown it can beat ranked teams — and lately, this rivalry has a way of making the records disappear.
