Currently on my shelf: A History of Future Cities. The narrative of four of the world's weirdest and most important cities: St. Petersburg, Shanghai, Mumbai, and Dubai, is told in this unusually entertaining and intellectual book. It depicts the urge for modernization by juxtaposing the stories of the architects and authoritarians, artists, and revolutionaries who transformed these modern locales into avatars of the global future.
If you want to learn more about the history of Dubai, this one is a must-read.
