A fish swims by bending its body side to side. A whale swims by bending it up and down. That single difference traces back roughly 50 million years, to a land-dwelling ancestor that walked before it ever swam.

Fish evolved in water from the start. Their propulsion comes from lateral undulation, a wave of muscle contraction travelling down alternating sides of the body. The tail fin, or caudal fin, is therefore oriented vertically, sweeping left and right like a rudder that never stops moving.

Whales are mammals, and mammals inherited a very different spine:

- Early terrestrial mammals evolved a flexible spine that flexes dorsoventrally, bending up and down during galloping
- This gait couples the forelimbs and hindlimbs through an arched back, which is why a running cheetah folds and extends like a spring
- When the ancestors of whales returned to the sea, natural selection worked with that existing spinal motion rather than rebuilding it
- The result is a horizontal tail, the fluke, driven by vertical oscillation

The fossil record documents this transition in remarkable detail. Pakicetus, described from Pakistan by Philip Gingerich and colleagues in 1983, was a wolf-sized land animal around 50 million years old. Ambulocetus, named by Hans Thewissen in 1994, swam with powerful hind feet in an undulating style much like a modern otter. Later forms such as Dorudon had shrunken hind limbs and almost certainly a fluke.

The fluke contains no bone. It is a dense lattice of collagen fibres, stiffened by connective tissue rather than skeleton, and it operates as an oscillating hydrofoil generating lift-based thrust with propulsive efficiencies estimated near 80 percent in some species.

Evolution does not design from scratch. It edits what is already there.
