The rotary screw air compressor powers much of modern industry: factory air tools, paint lines, food packaging, and pneumatic automation. It runs on a deceptively simple idea, two meshing helical rotors trapping and shrinking pockets of air.

How it works:
- A male rotor (typically 4 lobes) meshes with a female rotor (typically 5 or 6 flutes) inside a tight housing
- Air enters at the suction end and fills the cavities between the lobes
- As the rotors turn, the meshing line sweeps axially, sealing each pocket and steadily reducing its volume
- The compressed air exits through a discharge port whose shape sets the built-in volume ratio, Vi

Why it matters:
- It is a positive displacement machine, so each revolution moves a fixed volume of air
- Compression is continuous and nearly pulsation-free, unlike the stop-start stroke of a piston compressor
- Rated for 100 percent duty cycle, so it can run around the clock
- Rotor clearances are on the order of tens of microns, with no valves or piston rings to wear

The engineering challenge:
- Compression is set by geometry, not by system demand
- If the system pressure is below the internal pressure, air over-compresses and expands back out, wasting work
- If the system pressure is above it, backflow rushes into the pocket at discharge, also wasting work
- Matching Vi to operating pressure is a key efficiency lever

Oil-flooded vs oil-free:
- Oil-flooded units inject oil to seal clearances, lubricate, and absorb heat, holding discharge near 80 to 100 C
- Oil-free units rely on timing gears and coated rotors, but require multiple stages because dry compression runs much hotter
- Oil-free designs dominate where purity is critical, such as pharmaceuticals and electronics
