At first glance, a helicopter with two offset, intermeshing rotors looks like it’s breaking the laws of geometry. The blades sweep through each other’s airspace at high speed—so why don’t they crash into each other?

These aircraft are called synchropters (also “intermeshing rotor helicopters”). The design was pioneered by Anton Flettner in the 1930s and is still used today by companies like Kaman.

Here’s the trick 👇

1️⃣ The masts are tilted outward
Each rotor mast leans away from the centerline. This creates two slanted “rotor discs” that overlap in space but never in the same height plane. Even though the blades look like they’re crossing, their physical paths are vertically separated.

2️⃣ Each blade’s motion is phase-locked
The two rotor systems are connected through a synchronizing gearbox. Think of it like two gears meshing: if one rotor rotates, it forces the other to rotate with the exact same timing.
➡️ Result: the blades are always 90° out of phase, so their positions relative to each other are fixed.

3️⃣ Blade flapping is controlled
As each blade spins, it naturally “flaps” up and down. The helicopter uses rigid or semi-rigid rotor hubs and carefully tuned aerodynamic design so flapping never pushes a blade into the other rotor’s envelope.

4️⃣ Bonus benefit: no tail rotor needed
Because the two main rotors spin in opposite directions, the torques cancel out.
➡️ More lift for the same engine power
➡️ Shorter, more maneuverable airframe
➡️ Great for lifting heavy loads in tight spaces

Intermeshing rotors look chaotic, but they’re one of the most elegant examples of physics + mechanical engineering working perfectly together.

If you want a breakdown of coaxial vs tandem vs synchropter design, comment “ROTOR!” and I’ll make that next.
