Soft robotics is redefining what robots can do. At Stanford, researchers built a pneumatic soft robot that doesn’t walk or drive — it grows, reshapes, and rolls.

Key highlights:
	•	It’s untethered — it doesn’t need an external air source once deployed.
	•	It uses isoperimetric design: same internal air volume, but joints shift and edges reconfigure to change shape.
	•	It can roll, engulf objects, and morph from 2D to 3D structures.
	•	An earlier Stanford version was a “vinebot” — a tube that everts (turns inside out) to extend its length.

Why it matters:
	•	Safer around humans because it’s soft and deformable
	•	Useful in tight/confined spaces (search & rescue, exploration)
	•	Opens new design space — robots that morph instead of just actuating rigid joints
