🔬 Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) — where surfaces tell stories.

SEM uses a focused beam of electrons (vs light) to scan a sample’s surface, producing super high-resolution images of textures, shapes, and material features.

✅ Why SEM is powerful
• Reveals micro- and nanoscale topography — things you can’t see under regular microscopes.
• Detects surface composition using signals like backscattered electrons and X-rays.
• Can image both hard materials (metals, minerals) and soft/biological samples — though the soft ones often need special prep (drying, coating, or cryogenic cooling).

⚠️ Challenges / cool trade-offs
• Specimens need to be stable under vacuum; biological ones can shrink or distort if not handled carefully.
• Non-conductive samples often require a thin metal coat to prevent charging.
• The higher the electron acceleration voltage, the deeper penetration (can see more inside), but you may lose surface detail.

Want to try this? I’d post one image of something mundane (leaf, insect, mineral) under SEM + one side by side with normal photo so people can see the difference.

What’s something you’d like to see under an SEM? Drop your ideas below!
