Ever heard of the Boötes Void? 👀 It’s one of the largest known “holes” in the universe—about 330 million light-years across. To put that in perspective, the Milky Way is only ~100,000 light-years wide. That means you could fit our galaxy inside this cosmic desert over 2,500 times. 🤯

Despite its name, the void isn’t completely empty—it has a few hundred galaxies sprinkled inside. But compared to the tens of thousands we’d expect, it feels like a cosmic ghost town. Astronomers first discovered it in 1981, and it immediately challenged our ideas about how the universe is structured.

Today, we know the cosmos forms a “cosmic web”: clusters and filaments of galaxies woven together, with giant voids in between. The Boötes Void is just the most extreme example—a reminder that the universe isn’t packed with stars everywhere, but shaped by massive patterns of nothingness.

✨ Imagine if the Milky Way had been born inside the Boötes Void… humanity might never have realized there were other galaxies until the last century.
