RFK Jr.’s “Make America Healthy Again” movement targets a bunch of uniquely modern-day inventions—namely, ultraprocessed foods, the synthetic chemicals used in our food and agriculture systems, and the “perverse incentives” of the companies that head up these industries—as the root of today’s chronic disease epidemic. But for women, the people who primarily feed families, it all suggests that if they really care about their health and that of their children, they should source their food from somewhere less tangled up in Big Farm and steer clear of packaged products. The problem? Securing food outside the commercial system, like from a neighbor’s small-scale hobby farm, is only possible for a select few…and can actually *risk* your health. Ahem, milk is pasteurized for a reason. Shopping exclusively at a local farmer’s market or organic grocer also requires ample privilege. And growing food or raising animals yourself isn’t feasible for the roughly 80% of people who live in urban areas without access to land. Contrary to the halcyon images on many homesteading Instagram accounts, it also involves a massive investment of time, resources, and back-breaking work—all the reasons we gave up subsistence farming in the first place. #MAHA #RFK #foodtiktok #healthy #tradwifetok #ultraprocessed #snacks
