Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi pulled off a major political gamble on Sunday, leading her Liberal Democratic Party to a landslide victory in a snap lower house election -- the nation's second in less than 16 months.

The largest post-war victory for any party gives the LDP a strong command of parliament, but Takaichi says she will maintain the coalition with the small, libertarian Japan Innovation Party.

Takaichi will likely interpret the victory as a clear mandate to advance her aggressive fiscal and national security agenda, including major tax cuts and a big boost in defense spending.
