In Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada has launched its first-ever free grocery store, redefining how food aid is delivered. Instead of standing in line for pre-packed hampers, families in need can now walk through aisles, choose what they need, and check out with dignity — no money required.

Run by the Regina Food Bank and supported by BMO and local partners, the initiative lets eligible households shop for up to $200 worth of groceries every two weeks, including fruits, vegetables, dairy, and other essentials. The goal isn’t just to fight hunger — it’s to restore autonomy, respect, and hope to families facing hardship.

This innovative model is already inspiring other provinces to follow suit. It’s a reminder that real change starts when compassion meets action, and that feeding people should always begin with humanity.
