Arrived back at the home camp of Denver today and finally getting caught up on my content from #Idalia. Pretty much the only thing I had with me was one camera and my phone. So, now begins the real editing process
.
These images I captured upon arriving in Horseshoe Beach, Florida. Some taken less than an hour after the Hurricane had passed. I had originally tried to drive through the storm surge that was still present but it got too deep for my liking and I turned around
.
But, I knew how hard they had likely been hit, and as the rain stopped I threw my cameras in my backpack, pulled the car over and left it and went in on foot. I was joined by a local who, originally a little hostile towards a media guy coming in and while we walked, and he realized I was just a normal guy doing his job the right way, we became friends. I walked with him and he told me about the how's and why he ended up here and how it was a real tight niche community. I couldn't help but notices his nervous demeaner as we both anxiously walked towards town and he waited to see the fait of the town
.
At this point, law enforcement had closed the road and I was the only media in there to document the fresh hit from Idalia. We arrived to town, with a mound of debris blocking the road and preventing search and rescues from getting in. So, we all worked together to clean a small path for them to get through
.
A couple hours after the storm passed, resources really started to pile in and the waters began to recede as more helped arrived. These are some of those images I captured through the whole thing
.
The sense of community, and people coming together in the wake of disaster is about the only thing that keeps my mental health in check. The last year, has been truly devastating across the US
