Bleeding can happen QUICK. Especially in OB. ⁠

With high risk surgeries, we make sure we always have sufficient IV access (large bore peripheral and central line if needed). Ensure we have a type and cross (check those antibodies if it’s a type and screen), and we even can have blood in the room in a cooler if need be. ⁠
⁠
Keeping close track of how much blood has been lost is one of our main objectives. ⁠
⁠
We also have to calculate the ABL (Allowable blood loss). This in short means, how many mLs of blood are we “okay” with losing before we transfuse? ⁠

It depends on a myriad of factors but primarily cardiac status. ⁠
