So what gets released from the presynaptic neuron? In the slides, we focus on norepinephrine, but really, there are many neurotransmitters that can get released like: ⁠
⁠
👉Acetylcholine (ACh): Involved in muscle control, learning, and memory.⁠
⁠
👉Glutamate: The most abundant excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain, responsible for promoting neural activity.⁠
⁠
👉Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA): The primary inhibitory neurotransmitter that helps reduce neural activity and maintain balance.⁠
⁠
👉Dopamine: Regulates mood, pleasure, and reward pathways, involved in motivation and addiction.⁠
⁠
👉Serotonin: Plays a role in mood regulation, sleep, and appetite.⁠
⁠
👉Norepinephrine (noradrenaline): Involved in the "fight or flight" response and arousal.⁠
⁠
👉Epinephrine (adrenaline): Acts similarly to norepinephrine, involved in the stress response.⁠
⁠
👉Histamine: Plays a role in the immune system and also acts as a neurotransmitter in the brain.⁠
⁠
We don't have enough slides to cover what happens when each of these NTs gets released, but these are all good to know the effects of when studying drug mechanism of action. GABA, ACh, NE, Epi are all one's I'd focus on. ⁠
