I think sometimes when we get overwhelmed, or stuck in a clinical situation that's complex, sometimes we have to go back to basics. ⁠

Remember the H's and T's we went over last week? Those are a good place to start. ⁠
⁠
Hypo/Hyperkalemia is one of those H's. ⁠
⁠
So what's the treatment? C BIG K DROP⁠
⁠
👉Calcium gluconate or calcium chloride (stabilizes cardiac membrane)⁠
⁠
👉Bicarbonate (shifts potassium intracellularly)⁠
⁠
👉Insulin with glucose (shifts potassium intracellularly)⁠
⁠
👉Glucose (given along with insulin to prevent hypoglycemia)⁠
⁠
👉Kayexalate (sodium polystyrene sulfonate) (promotes potassium elimination)⁠
⁠
👉Diuretics (such as furosemide) (promotes potassium elimination)⁠
⁠
👉Resins (such as sodium polystyrene sulfonate) (promotes potassium elimination)⁠
⁠
👉Oxygen (supportive measure)⁠
⁠
👉Potassium restriction (avoidance of high potassium foods and medications)⁠
