Knowing your vent settings, ABGs, and normal lab values are all pretty important, not just for your interview, but to also really understand why we make the adjustments that we do when it comes to vent settings or other interventions. ⁠

Yes, we try to "fix" numbers, but you have to have a really good understanding of pathophysiology to make sure you're performing the right intervention. ⁠
⁠
For example, in the OR, sometimes my CO2 will be trending down. I might immediately think that I'm over ventilating my patient. ⁠
⁠
While that COULD be it, the other thing it could be is low perfusion. ⁠
⁠
I boost my patient's blood pressure, and the patient's ETCO2 goes up. ⁠
⁠
I can tell my phenylephrine is kicking in before the blood pressure even finishes cycling because I see my ETCO2 go from 29 to 34. ⁠
⁠
Understanding the causes of high and low CO2 that you see in the OR is definitely something to pay attention to and make sure you understand the rationale for. ⁠
