I weirdly think about grit a lot. 

I think about what it takes to get to places where most people don’t get. 

I think about the people in my life whom I truly admire. 

I think about who I gravitate towards, and the individuals who inspire me. 

I think about what kind of people I want my kids to grow up to become. 

The common theme? Grit. 

Grit is perseverance. It’s stamina. It’s sticking with something day in and day out. It’s working toward something and continuing to show up even when it’s difficult and painstaking. 

Was I born with an inclination to be gritty? I think so. I’ve always pushed myself since every I can remember. But was it also something that was cultivated? I also think so. Can someone become more gritty overtime, or is it something you have or you don’t? I’m not sure, to be honest. 

Angela Duckworth has a GREAT Ted Talk on grit. 10/10 recommend. 

Why do I bring this up? Well. Grit is a big part of becoming a CRNA. The application process alone requires grit. The road is long and the process strenuous. Then not to mention three years of an intensely rigorous program as well.

So when you think about what qualities you’re trying to cultivate in yourself, consider grit to be one of them. And see what things you’ve done or gone through in your life that showcase grit, and make sure you highlight ‘em.
