Welcome to episode 27 of #humanfriday where we present René Mathys, founder of Xeno_Print_AG, arguably the most pioneering company in the watch industry working with Super-LumiNova based products. 

”I love my new Chronoswiss Open Gear ReSec Paraiba!” exclaims René, when I get hold of him in his lab in Swiss watchmaking centre Biel/Bienne.

”The colour play on the dial from green to blue and purple when you move it around in the sun is something very special. I also love the three-dimensional aspect, how the hour hand is totally elevated. And when people react positively on my watch I can proudly say that we have participated in this project.”

René and his team at Xeno Print have created appliques that shine brightly through the night on the watch: The triangular hour hand, the index pillars circumferencing the dial and the facetted bars on the funnelled hour indicator. 
To create these solid details you mix Super-LumiNova with the ceramic material circonium oxide and then you cast the parts you need. This material pioneered by René in his laboratory called Globolight XP© has only been able for a few years. 

How did you come up with the idea?
“It came to me when I was at the dentist. Dentists work with ceramic materials, and I just started thinking about how it could be used together with lume in watchmaking. For the design it is really important for us is to have very sharp edges on the pillars and the facets – and that the light power in the mix shines for a long time after it has been charged,” René says.

You have a few watches. What is special about the Paraiba?
“At the moment the Paraiba is my favourite watch. And what has surprised me when I am wearing it is that not only people I know, but also strangers come up to me to complement me on my watch.”
