Welcome to episode 14 of #humanfriday, where we meet Chronoswiss staff and friends of the brand. Today’s episode: Ute Espig, Head of Quality Control.

With the loupe wrapped around her head Ute scrutinizes the dials, cases, hands, bands and every visible miniscule part of every watch before it goes out into the world watch aficionados and collectors. Ute’s widely known calm and patience is needed to spot the mistakes – which are rare, but unavoidable. “We are all humans, nobody is without fault. The important thing is to find it in order to correct it and only send out excellent products to our clients,” she says. Now it is almost a decade since Ute took her precision-game to the next level when she switched from a previous career in textiles to start at Chronoswiss. But she was not a novice. “My husband is a watchmaker. He had taught me a lot already before I started here.”

What is the most important in your job?
“You need to be calm and have a lot of patience. It is an absolute must to be in this frame of mind; otherwise you don’t see faults or anomalies. The more experience you have, the more precise you get.”

There is a connection between watches and fashion.
“There are indeed a lot of similarities – everything must be just right. But with watchmaking everything is just so much smaller and complicated …”

Talking about size, Chronoswiss is a small independent family company.
“Yes, and this really suits me. To work in an independent family company makes it more personal – we all know each other and we help each other out when needed. The team work is excellent.”

What is your favourite Chronoswiss model at the moment?
“This is a hard question! (Laughs) But I do like the the Opus Flag. It is really great with its blue, white and red colours combined with skeletonising. And without saying too much, there are some very interesting models with handmade guilloché coming very soon …”
