Welcome to episode 13 of #humanfriday, where we today meet our watchmaker Yahel Blarer, who is sharing the responsibility of service and repairs in the Lucerne atelier.

After seven years in the watch industry, Yahel Blarer is still waxing lyrical about the mechanical watches. “They are objects of filigree perfection, where everything must work, she says.”

What do you first see when you look at a watch?
“As one sees the external first, a watch is a jewel. But to me it becomes really exciting when you know the mechanics behind it. And, like in the case of Chronoswiss: the mechanics at the front of it. Here I have had to learn many new mechanisms, since the dial of our flying regulators double up as module baseplates for the three-dimensional design. This makes it very exciting for the client since you see that something is happening on the watch, especially on the Open Gear models where we also expose the essential wheels for the regulator.”

What kind of personality should you have to become a watchmaker?
“I got the advice already in high school to consider the watch industry thanks to my filigree talent and ability to focus. For service and repairs it also helps to be of a problem-solving nature. I just love the complicated challenge of finding a problem, fixing it and carefully reassembling it. That’s why one of my favourites is the Delphis with jumping hour. It has six springs that must be adjusted to make it work perfectly again. With such a complication, the works takes at least a full day.”

How long does the clients wait before you return their watches from a service without any major repairs?
“You cannot stress a good service. But we keep on our toes, as our goal is to return the watch within two weeks of its arrival here in our Lucerne atelier .”

What makes you happy at work?
“The teamwork, and it is a great feeling is when a watch starts working again. This means that you have done a good job.” #chronoswiss #modernmechanical #lucerne #watchmaking
