Welcome to episode 12 of #Humanfriday. Today we meet our watchmaker Kevin Hoffman, who works in service and production and experiments with materials and colours.

An introverted mountain lover six years into his watchmaking career, Swiss-American Kevin loves being part of the team at a small, independent watchmaker like Chronoswiss. He loves the problem-solving nature of watchmaking, and he is passionate about chemically achieving patinations and textures – expect experimental unexpected dials in the near future! According to Kevin you cannot judge a dog by its hair, but you can – to a certain extent – judge the owner by his or her watch.

What made you pursue a career in watchmaking?

“Every job is unique. To me the concept of watchmaking entails being able to find the problems that are in the watch, whether in its conception stage or when a watch comes in for service. This makes it fascinating: the search for the problem, finding it, fixing it. This gives me true satisfaction.”

How is it to work in an independent company like Chronoswiss?

“Do you want to be an invisible cog in a machinery or do you want to be somebody working with all aspects of a watch? I prefer to be a part of a small operation where we work on all aspects of a watch. Also, when it comes to customizations and service we are in direct contact with our customers, which makes it so much more personal – many of our customers say they feel like part of the company when buying a watch from Chronoswiss.”

What are your next steps?

“Our head of design Maik Panziera is teaching me the ropes with the guilloché machine, which I love! Over the years I have also experimented with patination – I am just fascinated by different patterns and textures and this skill we will hopefully put to use in future models here at Chronoswiss. Right now I have the freedom to test different procedures, and together we are also trying out some new mixes of colour and metal … stay tuned!” #chronoswiss #modernmechanical #lucerne #watches #swissmade #watchmaking
