Welcome to episode 9 #humanfriday, where we today meet scientist, writer and Chronoswiss Open Gear Ocean owner Gareth Worthington.

Your daytime job involves educating doctors on new cancer therapies. At night you write prized novels, play the guitar, collect watches and practice martial arts. How do you find the time for everything?

“It’s a matter of prioritising what you want to achieve, and you have to sacrifice some things. For instance, I seldom go to restaurants or bars. Of course it also helps that I get frustrated if I haven’t done anything in two hours.” (Laughs)

Where are you from originally?

“The UK. But, I have not lived there in a good ten years-I’ve lived in the USA, Portugal, Switzerland, Singapore … and then I came back to Switzerland.”

The perfect place to be for a watch collector. How did your watch interest start?

“I grew up with no money in a poor part of the UK. But, I was always interested in watches-it feels so good to put on a watch! So, I saved up for my first watch: a Hugo Boss with a blue domed glass, I thought it was the best thing ever! Unfortunately, I smashed it in a motorcycle accident. I worked my way up, and as my career moved along I could afford better things.”

How did you find out about Chronoswiss?

“I was searching online for a green dial dress watch and the Open Gear Ocean came up. I went to the Lucerne atelier, and I just couldn’t stop staring at it. I just can’t get over how the light moves over the handmade guilloché, how the dial changes from green to blue like the ocean. Since I grew up by the ocean and my first degree is marine biology, it is really the perfect watch for me.”

Your sixth and seventh novels are soon to be released, right?

Yes, I write predominantly hard sci-fi, but in April I release a techno thriller called Condition Black, and in May my first Nordic Noir A Time for Monsters. All my books are in development for TV/film with the Vesuvian Media Group, so if I will ever have a red carpet event the Open Gear Ocean is certainly the watch I will be wearing!
