Welcome to episode 9 of #humanfriday, where we today meet Michael Setz, watchmaker and component purchaser. Bon weekend from Lucerne!

On a “Schnuppertag” – Swiss German for testing day – Michael Setz realised the multitude of tasks a watchmaker is facing every day, and he got hooked. Spending his next four years in watchmaking school immediately led to a position at Chronoswiss. After five years of building and repairing watches his work description dramatically expanded, as was given the responsibility of the supply chain, which ranges from complete movements to single parts.

Tell us about your work.

“You must know all the functions and construction of parts and how to manufacture a new part when there is no replacement. This you must know more than for normal watchmaking – and that’s what makes it interesting! As responsible for the supply chain I must communicate with the team to make sure that all the parts for the new watches are there on time – ideally ‘just in time’”. 

What is the best about your job?

“The variety – I have to do a little bit of everything. In a small company everybody is important, and everybody knows that you have to do things beyond your job description. And I love the public nature of the Lucerne atelier. This is the future: a less business-oriented and more casual atmosphere, where people can come in and learn what modern mechanical watchmaking is all about.”

You are also involved in Chronoswiss new Certified Pre-Owned section on the website?

“Yes, this is a great way for collectors and watch lovers to purchase an older model with a two-year warranty. You can also exchange your old watch for a newer model.”

How would others describe you?

“Calm and reliable, I guess. I do what I say that I shall do … and I always try to give it my best. In my free time as well – I am quite sporty, I am really into soccer.
