Welcome to episode 5 of #humanfriday. Today we present Karin Gabriel, one of our watchmakers. Happy weekend, watch lovers! By andersmodig
She looks too young to have almost four decades of experience – but Karin Gabriel started her education to be a watchmaker back in 1984. With Chronoswiss since 2015, she works in close collaboration with our designer Maik Panziera. Especially during the development phase of new models when she gives him technical support, builds prototypes and advises him on how to avoid technical problems. “In an independent company with a small team you are more involved, closer to product and clients; you can be more creative,” she says.
When we meet in the Chronoswiss atelier in Lucerne Karin is placing the jewels on the dial of a C.303, a new modern mechanical movement to be released in October 2020. Steady hands perform dexterous work on the filigree hand guilloché dial. For Karin, there are no shortcuts to become a great watchmaker: “The ability to move your fingers, the hand-eye coordination… when prototyping where to look for the spaces and tolerances needed – all this only comes with experience.”
What is the biggest challenge? “As a watchmaker you must be concentrated, focused, careful, you must work with precision and not forget anything; you have to be a perfectionist. I also believe it is important to have a balanced life: I am also into nutrition, cooking, wine, sport, clothes … all of these are enriching to me."
What do you love most about watchmaking? “I find it fascinating that you can build so many differences into such a small space: different mechanics, designs, arts, colours, materials … A watch is something alive, mechanical and technically interesting – it is not just a thing of beauty. What also gives me pleasure that I at the end of the day have built something concrete – this gives me a sense of happiness.”
