Welcome to episode 4 of #humanfriday. Today we present our designer Maik Panziera. Happy weekend, watch lovers!

“How other people would describe me? I have no idea. Cut your hair and get a real job, maybe!?” Maik Panziera laughs as he looks up from the near century-old guilloché machine in Chronoswiss Lucerne atelier.
This goateed gentleman is not a watchmaker. But after almost four decades as a jeweller, dial maker and watch designer Maik sure knows how to design one from scratch. “In the next step a constructor translates my drawings into a functional watch, normally with no larger changes than 0.02 millimetres,” he says.
Fascinated by the watch industry’s combination of CNC and handmade, Maik joined Chronoswiss in 2012, thus propelling the brand into its modern mechanical era of three-dimensional designs combined with handmade guilloché and enamelling.
Most of the time Maik himself makes the enamel and guilloché dials – that on flying regulators are not really dials but mainplates of the movements.
The multi-talented Maik is also very involved in the manufacturing process. One of the latest challenges was the organically shaped SkelTec case, which houses the new C.304 movement. “In the car industry you can realise such shapes designs with injection moulding of aluminium. But with stainless steel you get a surface with microscopic holes. We eventually resolved this issue by adapting the conceptual single-part design into a five-part case pushing the limits for a five-axis CNC machine.”
A casual jeans and t-shirt look tells of a rock ’n’ roll heart, hinted at in his design philosophy and when on stage wielding a guitar with his band. “At an independent company you can do beautiful things that you like – you are not run by marketing. In the end I believe you must surprise people with your watches. Often our watches are so different that you love or hate them, and that is to me a quality in watch design. You buy a Chronoswiss for yourself – not to show off to others.”
