Welcome to the third #humanfriday, where we present the humans behind Chronoswiss. Text: andersmodig
“SkelTec and the new Opus Chronograph really show that Chronoswiss is back on track when it comes to innovation,” says Chronoswiss owner and director Oliver Ebstein.

I meet him on Monday in Chronoswiss Lucerne atelier where watchmakers are working with loupes and microscopes, finalising the first pieces to be delivered. Ebstein hands me the orange and blue Opus and the SkelTec. “The Opus is an evergreen, which has undergone a distinguishable evolution to fit our times, and the SkelTec that brings this 18th century craft into warp speed while still adding new, long-lasting, irreplaceable values. To me, all four models are modern mechanical watches.”

If time allows, Mr Ebstein resorts to the www to clear his head: watchmaking, woodworks and welding. “If I had more time I would love to work more in the Atelier, it is much more fun than number crunching. But I must confess – my dials would fail the rigorous quality control that goes with modern mechanical watchmaking,” he laughs.

When buying Chronoswiss in 2012, Ebstein was able to finally fulfil a long-time dream of running his own company while satisfying his horological interest. Applying a broad and deep knowledge from economics in the corporate world this entrepreneur and car lover loves to use his analytical brain to orchestrate social media campaigns. Oliver is also known to be an enabler – in the positive sense of the word. He empowers the team members to flourish through fruitful teamwork. “You should always hire people that are better than you are. Why work together with people if you don’t let them be the experts?” he asks rhetorically.

Having moved Chronoswiss to Lucerne, Switzerland in 2014, he is sure about one thing. “I am living the horological dream. To direct an independent watch company is hard work, but I love every day of it.”#
