I get this question all the time: what food has made you the sickest in all your years of travel?

No it wasn’t seafood (though I do get food poisoning from bad seafood maybe once a year in the United States), nor was it mystery meat or unwashed veggies. If you can even believe it it was from tainted cumin. 14 years ago, I ate some grilled lamb in Morocco that was seasoned with cumin. It was delicious, but when I returned, it was as though my mouth been in a fire. I couldn’t eat, drink, or swallow. It was horrific. I went to the University of Minnesota and met with a Doctor who diagnosed me with something called burning mouth syndrome. I still get flareups every once in a while and have a special protocol for when these flareups happen. It’s a virus and something I will be dealing with for the rest of my life. Bet this isn’t the story you were expecting!
