First off, I’m aware this isn’t always the case! But a lot of times it is easier than we think. As a mom of 7, who DOES discipline her kids, pretty strictly at that! But also tries to be gentle with their emotions while always being a teacher, this was very cool to watch:
KC (the 3yr old, is one of our most stubborn children, with a scream that often last 10+ minutes, doors slamming and everything in his path being destroyed..)
But CoCo, our sweet 5yr old. She did exactly what so many adults DON’T do.. (video timeline has no edits)
- She addressed what was wrong, very simply.
- She asked if she could help fix it. You can see he pauses to decide if he’s going to continue screaming or not.
- Then she plainly and calmly asked him to please stop crying.
- Knowing he still hadn’t decided, she offers a very simple alternative or a distraction, and within seconds of her staying completely calm, even brining a little extra joy in her mood (her own choice!) her brother’s demeanor completely changes and he follows her with a laugh..
It often is that simple.
Our moods feed our kids, and it’s our choice what we will feed them with. Do we throw more fire on the flame hoping it will cause them to back down (and yes, sometimes this is the case!) or do we set our pride down, even when we are annoyed, and frustrated and often just over it, and choose to give them a chance to meet us at a calm safe level, that teaches them a healthy way to react when things go completely wrong.
Remember, not many things go wrong in a 3yr olds life, so their tower breaking or food spilling effects their emotions the same way it does to adults when our car breaks down or we lose our job!
It’s all perspective. But it’s hard to see if you’re parenting with your pride.
