The Dallas Cowboys' defense is struggling badly, and the conversation surrounding first-year defensive coordinator Christian Parker has become increasingly divided.

Some Cowboys fans believe Parker is the biggest problem.

Others believe he was put in an impossible situation by the front office.

Mauricio Rodriguez believes the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Clarence Hill Jr. recently argued that Christian Parker was "set up to fail from the jump" by the Dallas Cowboys because the organization didn't provide the personnel or support necessary for him to succeed.

Mauricio doesn't completely agree with that assessment.

For starters, Parker was allowed to build his own coaching staff. The Cowboys apparently wanted to hire Mike Pettine, but Pettine declined because he had recently retired and wanted time away from football.

So Mauricio doesn't believe it's fair to say Parker received no support.

But the personnel argument is much more complicated.

Dallas did make several attempts to improve the defense.

The Cowboys signed Jalen Thompson to their biggest outside free-agent contract in more than a decade, traded a fourth-round pick for Rashan Gary, signed Coby Durant and attempted to pursue Maxx Crosby.

That's a significant improvement over the previous offseason.

However, that doesn't mean the Cowboys built a perfect defense.

Dallas entered the season with major questions at linebacker and pass rusher.

The Cowboys spent much of the offseason wondering who would play the MIKE linebacker position, and they never made the major veteran addition many expected.

The pass rush was another obvious concern.

Rashan Gary is a good all-around edge player, but Dallas still lacked a proven, elite pass rusher who could consistently win one-on-one against opposing offensive linemen.

Donovan Ezeiruaku and first-round pick Malachi Lawrence were intriguing young players, but neither was guaranteed to immediately become an impact pass rusher.

Von Miller was expected to provide rotational snaps rather than carry the pass rush.

So Mauricio believes Clarence Hill's larger personnel argument has merit.

But there is another major factor: injuries.

Christian Parker's defense relies heavily on its secondary, and Dallas has been forced to play without several of its most important defensive backs.

Joey Porter Jr., Coby Durant, Jalen Thompson and other players have dealt with availability issues.

That makes it difficult to evaluate Parker based solely on the results of the first five weeks.

At the same time, Mauricio refuses to completely absolve Parker.

The Cowboys have foundational defensive talent.

Caleb Downs.

Quinnen Williams.

Kenny Clark.

Malik Hooker.

There are also young edge rushers who should be capable of being elevated by good coaching.

Yet Dallas continues to use stunts and four-man games that have produced very little pressure.

Mauricio points out that the Cowboys are among the teams that use the most defensive stunts while also being among the least effective at generating pressure with them.

That part falls directly on Parker and the coaching staff.

So who is responsible for the Cowboys' defensive struggles?

Is it Christian Parker?

Is it the front office?

Is it the players?

Mauricio's answer is that it is all three.

This is a multifaceted problem, and reducing it to one person misses the bigger issue.

Watch Mauricio Rodriguez explain the truth about Christian Parker, the Cowboys' defensive personnel and why Dallas needs to stop looking for one person to blame.
