😨 What would you do if you witnessed someone choking? Red Cross volunteer Tiffani Grochalski jumped into action to save a choking person’s life, all while wearing an elf costume.

Here’s how it happened. ⬇️

On Dec. 3, 2022, Tiffani was dressed in holiday attire and selling baked goods in support of the Red Cross at the Misawa Air Base Winterfest in Japan, when she heard Robyn Kronick, a military spouse, yell for help!

Her mother Sonia Quinonez was struggling to breathe after a piece of bread became lodged in her throat.

“I was baby-wearing my daughter on my chest and couldn’t step in to help her, so I began shouting for help as loud as I could,” said Robyn.

Without hesitation, Tiffani used her Red Cross training to jump into action and provide immediate care.

“Tiffani took one look and realized my mom wasn’t breathing,” Robyn explained. “She calmly asked if she was choking to which my mom nodded her head yes. Without missing a beat Tiffani got behind my mom and began [abdominal thrusts]. She did it so perfectly that she was able to clear her airway in one thrust. My mom began breathing and was seen by medical personnel immediately after.”

Because of Tiffani’s courage and swift action, she was awarded the Red Cross Certificate of Merit, the highest accolade you can receive from our Lifesaving Award Program.
