The Othering and Belonging Institute, or OBI, released a racial disparities dashboard displaying the differences between Black and white life expectancy rates and the median racial wealth gap, among other topics, June 7.

OBI is a UC Berkeley research and policy group focused on topics including marginalization and inclusion. According to Aoyuan “Eve” Liao, a data scientist at OBI, their team could not find a centralized hub for measuring national racial disparities, so they created one.

Stephen Menendian, the project lead of the dashboard, came up with the idea of aggregating information on multiple disparities in one place, which he noted has not been done before.

Menendian added that most institutions studying racial justice often work in “silos,” only focusing on one disparity; instead, he wanted to present information in one place to portray the data in more intuitive ways.

“We tried line charts, radial graphs, tables, heat maps, etc. until we found one that we all agreed made the data easy to interpret,” said Jake Tompkins, information designer at OBI, in an email. “Our priority was to create something that would simply let the user click on a key indicator and visually understand how the performance for both racial groups changed from 1970 to 2020.”
