Earlier today in Tallahassee, a scare on FAMU’s campus had students and faculty on alert after sounds were mistaken for gunfire.

According to the Tallahassee Police Department, a call came in around noon reporting a person walking with a firearm near Lake Bradford Road. Due to the location near campus, a shelter-in-place alert was issued out of caution in areas near Bragg Stadium and FAMU Villages.

At the same time, a robotics competition was taking place on campus. The sounds from the event were mistaken for gunfire, which led to multiple reports and concern from the community.

Within 30 minutes, an all-clear was issued after officers found no active threat and no individual matching the original report.

TPD also reminded the public that under current law, carrying a firearm is not automatically a crime if done legally and outside restricted areas.

We’re grateful for the quick response from law enforcement and glad to hear our FAMU community is safe 🙏🏾🐍🧡💚

Stay alert, stay informed, and always remember if you see something, say something.
