A former UW baseball player is calling out the program after he says he was cut from the team without ever being evaluated.

Ethan Unruh shared that after Washington hired a new head coach, players were told they could keep their scholarship money but would not be allowed to stay on the team. The decision was made before the coach had even seen them play.

“You can stay in school and keep your money. You just won’t be on the team.”

Unruh says multiple players were given the same message. Some were starters. Some were highly rated freshmen. Nearly half the team entered the transfer portal.

“Not one of us received a sit-down. Not one of us had a conversation about what the future held. We were simply discarded.”

Unruh claims the coach used a loophole to get rid of players while technically honoring their scholarships, making room for his own recruits without the legal backlash of revoking aid.

“The NCAA rules prohibited him from taking our money. So instead, he took the game from us.”

This wasn’t about performance or accountability. According to Unruh, it was about control, power, and clearing house to build the coach’s version of the program, regardless of who was already there.

“He walked into a locker room full of young men who trusted the university and stripped it all away before he even shook our hands.”

Unruh has since submitted his full letter to the NCAA, warning that the transfer portal, originally created to give student-athletes more freedom, is now being used by coaches to build careers at the expense of the kids who are left behind.

This isn’t a one-off. It’s a glimpse into what happens when a program puts winning and job security above its own players.
