Stitching together a cosmic crochet⁣
⁣
Using NASAWebb, astronomers have discovered a thread-like arrangement of 10 galaxies that existed just 830 million years after the big bang. (You can see the 10 galaxies marked by 8 circles in the fourth image. Two of the circles contain more than one galaxy.) The 3 million light-year-long structure is anchored by a luminous quasar – a galaxy with an active, supermassive black hole at its core. The team believes the filament will eventually evolve into a massive cluster of galaxies, much like the well-known Coma Cluster in the nearby universe.⁣

Galaxies run in packs. They gather not only into clusters, but into vast interconnected filamentary structures with gigantic barren voids in between. A “cosmic web” of sorts, which started out subtle but grew more distinct over time as gravity drew matter together. The discovery is from Webb's ASPIRE science program, whose main goal is to study the cosmic environments of the earliest black holes. In total, the program will observe 25 quasars that existed in the first billion years after the big bang.⁣

Image descriptions: Three-image swipe through of a black field speckled with a variety of galaxies of numerous shapes and sizes. The galaxies are white, yellow, blue and red. Red is the predominant galaxy color in the field, indicating very distant galaxies. In the fourth image, the 10 galaxies are arranged in a diagonal, thread-like line from the bottom left to the top right. Most of the white circles are separated. However, there is a pair of circles grouped together on the bottom left of the first image, as well as a cluster of three circles on the right side of the third image. A quasar called J0305-3150 appears in the middle of that right cluster. Within the quasar’s circle, there are strong red diffraction spikes radiating out from a white core. Galaxies in the other circles are seen only as red specks.⁣
