For this week’s story of #HowWeMetAtRU, we have Carla Mells, Sandra Barrera, Saskia Cipriani, Lauren Surick, Angy Bayon, Alexandra Zorilla, Leona Wilson, Chailyn Morales Frances, and Tapia Mateo ✨

“We all met during our third year at Rutgers University. We were drawn to a Latina sorority named Lambda Theta Alpha - Epsilon Chapter. They (LTA) were hosting a social one fall evening at the @ruclac, and it was there that our bond was sealed. We all became interested members around the summer of 2001 and embarked on a year of service and activities required by the organization. We connected right away and took advantage of a great summer together! 

Most of us are first-generation college students and were actively involved in all things Rutgers. @leonaemm worked as a community service officer, @saskiae3 worked at the Center for Latino Arts and Culture for their annual summer program, and when September 2001 dawned on us, we went to every single off-campus party (college ave campus) as part of welcome week! In the fall of 2001, we started the process of becoming members of LTA. That is where we learned about Rutgers. We would meet at different sites like Cooper dining hall on Douglass and host programs on college avenue in the evening. We took every bus Rutgers offered from A-LX. 

Since then, we have continued our bond as not only sorority sisters but as a family. We have been to each other’s weddings and special occasions for our children, and every so often get together at or near Rutgers to reflect on our memories. We remember places like Maritas on Tuesday evenings (no longer there), the CLAC, and ceremonies like Rites of Passage. These days we share pics and stories on WhatsApp until we get the moment to get together and celebrate our 20+ friendship that all started at the banks of the old Raritan! RU RAH RAH!”
