⚠️ First let me say no feeding or petting the wild/semi wild feral ponies is allowed. Keep your distance as they can bite and kick especially if you get too close to the baby foals. Some of the ponies will walk towards you and even follow you down the trail. 

📌 Locations to Find Wild Ponies in Virginia

1) Mount Rogers National Recreational Area - along the Appalachian Trail | both ponies, cattle and Texas Longhorns roam in this area

2) Grayson Highlands State Park - ponies have free range within the 1,500 acres of the park boundaries 

🔹There are approximately 150 ponies in the area separated into 3 herds; some in the state park, Scales, Pine Mountain, Rhododendron Gap areas. They were first introduced in 1974 to help protect the area from wildfires by eating grasses and underbrush. 

🔹 The Wilburn Ridge Pony Association takes care of veterinary needs, supplements, and provides salt and hay in the winter months. 

3) Chincoteague National Historic Park - the ponies here are fenced and corralled into an area so you can only see them from a distance unless you have a boat or go on pony tours in the area 

Other East Coast Locations

📍Assateague National Historic Area (Maryland) - ponies roam free range on the beach and tidal areas; you can be ticketed in this National Park if you getting 40 feet of a pony; also miniature sika deer can also be seen here

📍Cumberland Island (Georgia) - ponies roam the barrier island freely 

NOTE: I have been to all at these locations and have seen the ponies with my own eyes. I have to say my two favorite places for viewing ponies on the East Coast out of this list would be the Mount Rogers/ Grayson Highlands area and Assateague National Park
