✨WILD Ponies in VA

🚫 Firstly I have to say these are wild animals and they should not be touched. They can bite AND kick so please keep your distance. Yes some do walk towards you and will even try to lick salt off of your hands or legs but do them a favor and don’t allow this. 
🚫 And of course do not feed them. Let’s keep them WILD!

Pony Facts

📌 Approximately 150 ponies live in the Mt Rogers Recreation Area & Grayson Highlands State Park
📌 There are 10-15 herds in varying sizes 
📌 Some of the ponies are descendants of the Assateague & Chincoteague ponies and were released in these areas in 1975 to help control the brush along the balds
📌 Mares breed once a year and you will often see babies ponies or foals

🔎 Take photos and enjoying watching these WILD or semi WILD ponies from a safe distance.  They don’t rely on humans for food, BUT they are friendly and curious to us humans. 

🌲TIP: Give yourself lots of time to explore this area! The Virginia’s Highlands are an absolutely stunning part of the state. You won’t want to leave!!
