Temple’s defense had been its bright spot for much of the 2024 season. Despite holding a 2-5 record before its game against ECU on Oct. 26, the Owls had been playing better than a team with two victories and could easily have won four games. They attempted to bolster that claim against a Pirates team that had just fired its coach a week prior. Instead, Temple’s wheels completely came off.

The Owls gave up an abysmal 500 yards on the day and the Pirates ran circles around them all game. ECU quarterback Katin Houser diced the Owls up for 269 yards and five touchdown passes, ripping a secondary unit that had received praise all year to shreds for 60 minutes. The result was a 56-34 loss for Temple and the defense leaped back after improving all season.

“We had just things that were just not characteristics of our defense,” Drayton said. “A lot of guys missing gaps, eyes in the wrong place. We just did not execute on defense that well at all today.”
