Temple Men’s Basketball was outrebounded by 19 in its 74-56 loss to Villanova Monday night. The Wildcats put immediate pressure on Temple’s offense with a full court press from the opening tip. Villanova took an early 10-6 lead off a bucket from former Owl Zion Stanford.

The Owls relied on guards Jordan Mason and Aiden Tobiason throughout the beginning of the game as they had eight and seven first-half points, respectively. However, Temple’s offense struggled outside of them and the Wildcats started to exploit its defense from three.

Villanova used five first-half triples to take a 29-28 lead into the locker room. The teams traded baskets to start the second half before the Wildcats used a 16-3 run to take a 51-42 lead with 11 minutes left in the game. Guard Gavin Griffiths connected on a three to cut the deficit to 55-49, but that was the closest the Owls got again.

Temple went scoreless for the next four minutes while Villanova scored nine straight points to extend its lead to 64-49 with three-and-a-half minutes left in the game. Seven of those points came from guard Tyler Perkins, who scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half. Temple did not have another run left in it as Villanova pulled away for the win.

Temple will take on Saint Joseph’s in the third place game of the Big 5 Classic at Xfinity Mobile Arena on Dec. 6 at 4:30 p.m.
