Throughout Advent, I spent much of my time in the book of Deuteronomy, which is admittedly not a traditional book to study this time of year.

I found myself getting so frustrated with Moses going on and on about e v e r y t h i n g to the people of Israel. I wanted to reach into the Bible and shake him and say, “JUST LET THE PEOPLE INTO THE PROMISED LAND!”

And it wasn’t until tonight that I connected that to myself. How often do I want to jump right into what the Lord has promised me? I’m so quick to fast forward to where I want to be that I often overlook the fact that there is learning and preparation that needs to happen beforehand.

The people of Israel needed to be prepared for the promised land, and like them, we need to be prepared before the Lord can give us the things He’s promised us.

The people in the intertestamental period (time between the last Old Testament prophet, Malachi, and the birth of Jesus), had been looking for a Savior to come for 400 years but had to wait until they were ready. The minor prophets teach again and again about preparing themselves for the coming of the Lord.

I’ve had to learn that walking with Jesus often means waiting. Waiting for His timing, His preparation, doing things right, and not skipping ahead to the good parts.

And while we await Christmas Day for the birth of our King, it’s in the day-to-day of our everyday lives where we wait for the ultimate promise that He’s coming back.

And all the things we’re waiting for now, that feel hard and aren’t quite right will be perfectly restored, all because of the perfect righteousness of that baby in a manger 2,000 years ago.
