Sometimes advocating for your child means advocating for yourself. Remember last week when I mentioned this girl started at a new OT clinic and they wanted us there four times a week? Well the waiting room where all parents had to wait was insanely noisy, TV full blast the entire time, and I couldn’t hear myself think, plus it was a 30 minute drive, and they didn’t have enough consistency, so we were booking appointments for super crazy times of the day. It was going to take over our lives, and not in a great and fulfilling way. And thanks to wendybertagnole and her sensory solutions course, I know my noise cup is way too small to handle sitting in that waiting room four hours a week. Were Kinsley’s needs being met there? Yeah probably, but if it comes at the expense of me being a super anxious and irritable human four days a week who is constantly stressed out about driving all over the valley and not being able to fit in her other therapy appointments, is it really worth it? Yesterday I decided no. And I’m not letting myself harbor guilt over it either. We called our local OT clinic who will do an eval in a couple weeks, and while they probably won’t see her four times a week, she’ll be getting OT, and that’s better than nothing. Today I decided that our family time was worth more than chasing endless amounts of free Medicaid provided therapy. Which brings me to another point, just because something is free doesn’t mean you should do it. Everything is a balance and while we weren’t paying for that OT, it was costing me gas money, time with my kids, sanity, and a million and one other things. Onward and upward ↗️🏔 .
