I keep telling myself, “It shouldn’t be this hard.” And yet every week I feel like there is some fight I get thrown into for Kinsley with school. The latest one, picking her up from school and her teachers constantly telling me, “She was crawling so much today! She was having a blast! It’s so cute! She wanted to crawl instead of walk, so we let her… another girl got on the floor and crawled with her today!” But the thing is… where’s all the standing/walking goals that are on her IEP. Why did she crawl 200 feet on concrete from the door of the school to the playground. Literally sent this email to her teacher today after several attempts at verbal communication falling on deaf ears, “I would like it added to Kinsley’s IEP that she is NOT supposed to be crawling in school. 1) Her crawling all over the ground is disgusting. It leads to illness and germs from floors that are not sanitized on a daily basis. 2) She is four and is not supposed to be deciding when she walks and when she crawls. If she’s given the choice to walk or not walk then she will always choose the easier option and will not get stronger. 3) She is a human with dignity. You wouldn’t expect an 18 year old to crawl everywhere so she should be held to that expectation. If all her peers are walking, she should be walking. I can understand crawling on the playground, or in the toy area of the  classroom, but only after she has used her walker to get herself there. She is physically capable of using her walker and needs that enforced. Let me know if you’re able to add this to the IEP or who else I need to contact to make this happen.” My heart hurts that it always comes down to this. I shouldn’t have to go in guns blazing every week, but atlas, we will fight, together, always. .
