Casually risking my life every time I stroll around the neighborhood 🫣

Southern Vermont is famous for our 300 year old marble quarries. The rugged mountains near Manchester, Dorset, Danby, and Arlington are covered in marble, and colorful pieces can be found everywhere. The easiest way to learn about this history is to stroll around town and look down!

✨ My hometown of Manchester and neighboring villages are known for our “unique” marble sidewalks (aka dangerous AF). When you add rain, snow, or any hint of moisture, there’s a 100% chance of slipping. Every resident of the Shires has scars to prove it 😂 Honestly, what were our ancestors thinking?

☃️ The remains of our quarry culture can be found all over the Shires. In Dorset alone, there are 31 old quarries hiding in the hills. This is where America’s first marble quarry was founded and the largest underground marble quarry in the world still operates. In the summer, you can even swim in the original quarry!

💫 Besides our bougie sidewalks, “Danby Marble” can be found at the Jefferson Memorial, US Supreme Court, NY Public Library, United Nations, and Martha Stewart’s kitchen. Geology rocks!

🙃 If you’re frolicking around the Shires this weekend, make sure you’re wearing shoes with solid traction. These slippery sidewalks are nottt to be trusted!
