In 1963, despite decades of women’s achievements in aviation, a woman piloting an airliner was still an unfamiliar sight. ✈️👩‍✈️

In this Candid Camera segment, actress Fannie Flagg poses as an airline pilot. The reactions capture the expectations women faced when pursuing careers in the cockpit.

Two decades earlier, more than 1,000 Women Airforce Service Pilots had flown approximately 60 million miles during World War II. They transported aircraft, towed targets, and performed demanding flying assignments.

Yet those accomplishments did not translate into equal access to airline jobs.

Women were fighting for the opportunity to do work they were fully capable of performing alongside men. They could earn their qualifications, build their experience, and demonstrate their skill, then still face rejection because of their gender.

The women who persisted helped move aviation forward. Every opportunity they earned, every colleague they inspired, and every assumption they challenged helped open the cockpit to those who followed.

Because of those pioneers, generations of girls could grow up seeing a woman at the controls and picture themselves there, too.
