There was a time when one paycheck could support an entire family. 🏡💸

Over 50 years ago, $3,000 could get you a brand-new car with enough left over to fill your house with new appliances and TVs. Today, that same $3,000 barely covers a few months of car payments.

Back then, a normal job could cover a house, a car, food on the table, and still leave room to save. A home cost around three times what a family made in a year. Today, it’s more than five times in most of the country, and way worse in big cities.

Paychecks also grew with the economy. When companies made more money, workers usually took home more too. Over the years, the cost of housing, healthcare, and college climbed way faster than wages, and that gap has only gotten wider.

Debt was different too. Most families paid cash for everyday things and only borrowed for big purchases like a home. Now, credit cards, car loans, and student loans eat up a huge part of people’s income before they ever get a chance to save.

The answer isn’t wishing you were born in a different time. It’s understanding the game you’re playing today. Prices aren’t going back down, so the people who win now are the ones who spend less than they earn, stay away from bad debt, and put their money into things that grow faster than prices do.
