More than 400 years ago, Galileo challenged one of the most widely accepted assumptions about gravity: that heavier objects naturally fall faster than lighter ones.

In everyday life, that seems obvious. Drop a bowling ball and a feather, and the bowling ball hits the ground first.

But the difference isn’t gravity. It’s air resistance.

In this experiment, scientists used one of the world’s largest vacuum chambers to remove the air surrounding both objects.

Without air resistance slowing the feather, something remarkable happens: the bowling ball and feather fall together, reaching the ground at virtually the same instant.

Both accelerate at approximately 9.8 meters per second squared, regardless of their enormous difference in mass.
