Law 4 already prohibited dangerous jewelry by 2002. Before the 2006 World Cup, IFAB told referees to enforce the rule strictly and remove earrings, rings, necklaces, bracelets and bands, even when covered with tape.

Since July 1, 2026, non-dangerous accessories may be worn if securely covered. Dangerous items still must be removed.
