Qin Shi Huang’s tomb remains sealed more than 2,000 years later. 🏺

China’s first emperor was buried in 210 BCE near Xi’an, and archaeologists still have not opened the central chamber because excavation could damage what survives inside. Soil studies around the mound have also reported unusually high mercury levels, echoing ancient accounts of mercury rivers in the mausoleum.

The same logic drives other locked sites. France closed the original Lascaux cave in 1963 after visitors damaged the paintings, Finland’s Onkalo repository was built to isolate spent nuclear fuel for 100,000 years, and Norway’s Svalbard Seed Vault opens only to manage backup seed deposits and withdrawals. The common thread is controlled access for preservation, ritual, or containment.
