Ukraine’s Chornobyl Exclusion Zone still contains radiation hotspots, Tanzania’s Lake Natron holds highly alkaline water, and Turkmenistan’s Darvaza gas crater has burned for decades. Kamchatka’s Valley of Death is associated with volcanic gases that can poison the air.

Brazil’s Snake Island is known for endemic golden lancehead vipers, and North Sentinel Island is protected from outside approach to preserve the Sentinelese community. Together, the six sites show that danger can come from contamination, chemistry, toxic gas, wildlife, or strict human isolation.
