The vibe for October is Detroit Harmony’s statewide Instrument Drive! 

To date, Detroit Harmony has collected over 3,000 instruments from across the city and distributed more than 2,000 of those to schools, community partners, and music programs citywide. And it’s time for a restock! 

From October 1-31, the instrument drive welcomes wind, strings, brass, and percussion instruments in any condition to continue the mission of aligning students with music access, education, performance opportunities, and support. *Please note we do not accept pianos. 

No instrument? No worries! Monetary donations of any size are also welcome. Visit dso.org for information about instrument drop-off points and/or to donate.

#DetroitHarmony services the city with a vision to create a music ecosystem that not only gives instruments to students, but also nurtures their growth in music-making and the workforce. 

With a goal to eliminate barriers of access, the initiative offers private and mobile music lessons for youth of all ages and experience levels.

Malichi and his mother learned about Detroit Harmony and the music lesson program through their enrollment with community partner, Engaged Detroit (The Village PCL), a homeschool co-op and advocacy network on the city’s east side, founded by Bernita Bradley. 

Over the course of three months (April-June) students received free music lessons, worked with a teaching assistant, and gained their own instrument to take home and continue their practice.

DETROIT HARMONY is a citywide collaborative between the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and arts nonprofits, schools, community organizations and city leaders. The initiative aims to strengthen Detroit’s music education opportunities for every child while also growing economic opportunity by supporting the instrument technicians, music educators, and teaching artists essential to a thriving musical community.
